PRELIMINARY PROGRAM – CMS WINTER MEETING IN SANTA BARBARA

9:00–9:15 Welcome, Fred DeJarlais, President and John Fleming, Vice President for Southern California
9:15–9:30 Jon Jablonski, Our host and Head of the Map and Imagery Laboratory for UCSB. Mr. Jablonski will provide an orientation of the facility.
9:30 - 10:15 Julie Sweetkind-Singer is the Assistant Director of the Geospatial, Cartographic and Scientific Data and Services and the Head of the Banner and Earth Sciences Library and Map collections at Stanford University and G. Salim Mohammed is the Digital and Rare Maps Librarian. They will cover collection building for the David Rumsey Map Center at Stanford University.
10:15 - 11:00 Will McClintock is a project scientist at the Marine Science Institute at UCSB. Mr. McClintock will cover “SeaSketch”, software designed to enable collaborative geodesign. Initial usage will be for comprehensive marine spatial planning in New Zealand and the Galapagos Islands.

11:15 - 12:00 Glen Creason is the Map Librarian at the Richard J. Riordan Central Library and author of “Los Angeles in Maps.” Mr. Creason will speak about the discovery of hundreds of thousands of maps saved from the dumpster and contributed to the Los Angeles Library after the death of the death of John Feathers, the collector/hoarder.
12:00 - 12:30 General membership meeting
12:30 - 1:30 Lunches – sandwiches / salads, beverage and sweet
1:30 - 2:15 Dan Montello is a Professor in the Department of Geography and an associated faculty member in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at UCSB. Dr. Montello’s talk explores the feasibility of characterizing people’s mental representation of world geography in cartographic and projection terms.
2:15 - 3:00 Kathy Brewster is a docent at the Santa Barbara Historical Society. Ms. Brewster will speak about the History of Santa Barbara.
3:00 - 3:15 Break – beverages and relocate to the Davidson Library.
3:15 - 4:15 Rachel Tobler, member of University Librarian Advancement Council, will talk about library development. Jon Jablonski will give us a tour of the Map and Imagery Laboratory and speak about the history of the collection.
4:15 – 4:30 Member’s Memorable Maps
4:30 - 5:15 Director’s meeting.
4:45 - 6:00 Adjourn for Wine and Cheese Social in the Cheadle Room of the Davidson Library
